. >> well, basically, you know, we're just disappointed that governor romney and president obama haven't addressed gun violence in a concrete, specific way. and so basically we're demanding a plan from both of them. in advance of a presidential election, and presidential debate in denver, and asking that they put forth something specific, aside from just platitudes and moments of silence, and actually get down to the business of preventing that violence. >> how likely do you think it is, i mean ron has covered more -- more presidential debates than the rest of us. >> you know, this issue i think has been shelved by a myth. and the myth is since al gore lost in 2000 that gun control is overwhelmingly been rejected by the country. in fact the country is very closely divided. almost exactly in half. support has diminished since bill clinton was in august and was making the case for it. you contrast columbine when there was enormous white house focus and national conversation after those shootings to what happened here where there is the silence. democrats in particular have been intimidat

of the middle east. >> sean: the first presidential debate is on wednesday. the administration has been spending most of their weekend trying to lower expectations for the great orator obama, even the president saying, well, romney's good, i'm just okay. does that work if you're a sitting president? >> look, incumbent presidents who lose debates are in big trouble. this is a president who has the begins of a new recession, that with all the economic reports wednesday, thursday, friday are pointing to a in recession. the philadelphia federal reserve is pointing to a new recession. the manufacturing index dropped to the january 2009 -- all this is happening right now. this is a president whose foreign policy is collapsing around us. you can see it almost every day now on television. if romney is firm and direct and clear, i think that obama has a very real likelihood of coming out of this debate with people finally late on wednesday evening understanding how big the decision is and how big the choice is, and at that point we'll be in a totally new election. >> sean: you think it could have -- look

president obama? >> i think this is a terrible strategy, actually, for the romney campaign. i think if you look -- if you look at the two periods recently when presidential debates shifted the polls, it was kerry in '04, he gained three or four points on bush after those debates and it was bush against gore in 2000 who gained points mostly because gore was unlikable. in neither case was there a sort of there you go again type zinger and frankly, the idea of mitt romney, mr. phony, delivering some kind of canned zinger, that's exactly the wrong strategy and i suspect this is just misdirection by the romney campaign. >> i love that ross just called mitt romney mr. phony. i'm done. thank you, ross. >> he just zinged you. very interesting. i will leave you to squabble over the "new york times" newsroom floor. thank you very much indeed. >>> tomorrow night, i sit down with arnold schwarzenegger. you watched the "60 minutes" interview but are left with unanswered questions. so was i so i asked them. arnold schwarzenegger tells all. a pretty moving interview. >>> coming up, a woman who says there

a presidential election where neither candidate wants to talk about the specifics, get even close to talking about the specifics. you even have a case where the congress and the obama administration slowed the growth of medicare spending by $700 billion, and they're being attacked by republicans for having done that. so, in an environment where you can't talk about medicare, in an environment where no one will talk about base broadeners, everyone talks about loophole closers, how do you, how do you get from here to there? and let me ask doug, first, you said that the environment will be different in 2013. other than this pressure you talked about pro the rating agencies what will get these guys singing kumbayah with each other? >> they're not going to sing kumbayah. i don't want to pretend that they will. this environment is the worst but this would be the right time to fix the fiscal cliff so we don't have to worry about the economics. not happening. lame duck would be the second worst. and for all the reasons i outlined i think it is very unlikely we'll do anything real significant. do the
